Between the blood and the binding, there is always a choice.

I write for those who were never given one.

Biography

A hopeless romantic at heart, H. L. Rillon writes stories where love is hard-won and healing comes with tenderness and grit. When she’s not writing, she reads with a cold cup of coffee nearby or wrangles three children, two cats, and a retired service dog with the grace of a seasoned chaos coordinator. Living with CPTSD and multiple chronic illnesses, she infuses her work with themes of survival, resilience, and the quiet strength it takes to keep going, even when the world feels unkind. She believes in love that bleeds, heroines who bite back, and magic that comes with a price.

Other Information

Why I Write Dark Fantasy:

I grew up on anime, shows like The X-Files, video games like Runescape, and deep trauma that even my psychiatrist couldn't listen to. Because of this, I write stories where the past isn't just a backdrop; it influences every choice. My work blends emotional trauma, soft horror, and high-stakes love in fantasy worlds shaped by corruption, ancient gods, and quiet rage.

Themes I Return To:

  • Survival after betrayal
  • Found family in the aftermath
  • Magic with consequences
  • Love that feels dangerous
  • Quiet strength over loud power

What Inspires Me:

Forgotten places, folklore, trauma, emotionally burdened characters, ancient trees, the pain of something almost remembered.

Personal Quirks:

  • I do my own cover designs.
  • I’d rather write a villain’s redemption arc than a hero’s victory speech.
  • I have playlists for every scene or village.
  • I once rewrote a love confession twelve times because it didn’t hurt me enough.
  • I believe every good book should hurt at least a little.
  • I am incredibly disorganized yet highly organized all at the same time with my notes (including note walls).
  • I am working on 5 different book series, each one has notes for up to 4 books, and counting.
